2008 Chaiten volcano eruption

  volcano eruption               electrical storm

On 2 May 2008, Chaiten volcano in Southern Chile had begun erupting. The eruption was a surprise as the last time the volcano erupted was about 9000 years ago. Chaiten volcano spewed lava and pumped huge volumes of ash more than 19 kilometres into the sky. An electrical storm was generated due to the ash and dust that has towered the sky.

Chaiten is above the peru-chile subduction zone. The Nazca plate is subducted under South American tectonic plate. Southern Chile is more active than the Northern Chile might be due to the low angle of subduction. Chile also sits on the Pacific's volcanic ring of fire.

This eruption has caused disruption of agriculture and health problems. It has also caused the airports in Chile Argentina to close or cancel flights.

The goverment has evacuated Chaiten, a small captital near the volcano, and Futaleufu which is near the Argentine border.

Chaiten volcano erupted without recognised warming was due to the fact that it was not routinely monitered. Although scientists usually monitor volcanoes that is active, they should also monitor dormant volcanoes so as to minimise the number of the people having health problems. This could also help minimise the loss of money as people living there would be given time to leave and farmers can take their animals along to the safety zone.
